Complex Themes and Simple Literature
Welcome to Children’s Literature! Children’s Literature is designed to familiarize you with the seemingly simple, but vastly complex, world of Children’s Literature, from picture books to young adult literature.  Students will explore the genre’s evolution, its many forms and purposes, and the challenges writers face composing material designed for a specific and limited audience.

Goal:  Through critical reading, analytical writing, careful viewing, spirited discussion, and original composition, students can demonstrate an understanding of the paradoxical nature of Children’s Literature:  that which appears simple is, in fact, very sophisticated.  Students will learn critical reading and writing strategies which they will apply to more age-appropriate literature.
