LSM Wind Ensemble

The Lewis S. Mills High School Wind Ensemble is an advanced instrumental performing ensemble and is directed by Mr. John A. Deeb. A level 1 course at Lewis S. Mills, this organization rehearses daily and engages in a variety of performances locally and throughout the United States and abroad.

An advanced instrumental performing organization, members of the Wind Ensemble will be selected by a placement audition. Music performed by the Wind Ensemble will have a greater level of difficulty, which will require an increased amount of individual practice time.A member of the Wind Ensemble should expect to learn and perform music on a grade IV-V level and be responsible for basic music theory principals. All members are expected to attend all rehearsals, and practice outside of school each day an amount of time that allows for continual progress, and ultimate mastery of all assigned music. Students who elect Wind Ensemble will be expected to participate in all scheduled concerts, which will number no less than three and will be responsible for the learning of all music assigned by the instructor. (All members of the Wind Ensemble are also members of the Spartan Marching Band and will be expected to participate in all performances and rehearsals.)

Throughout the school year, section rehearsals are scheduled after school on selected Thursdays from 2:05-2:45 p.m. This is done to give each section individualized instruction on their particular instruments parts. While theses sectionals are not required, they are strongly recommended and will count as extra credit for anyone who attends.

Wind Ensemble Goals
The primary goal of this course is to introduce the students to a wide range of quality band literature on a medium-difficult to difficult level. It also strives to teach the student proper rehearsal techniques as well as proper concert performance behavior. In addition, elements of music theory and history will be introduced during daily rehearsals throughout the year.

What Can Parents Do?
• Insist on regular home practice.
• Emphasize the meaning of commitment.
• Help with concert & rehearsal attendance
• Help with timely returns of forms, uniforms etc.
• Keep the "Charms" Database updated.

Wind Ensemble Assessment
Regular and ongoing evaluation of the students’ progress will be monitored by performance and written evaluation throughout the school year. Effort, attitude, and attendance at rehearsals and performances will also be used as criteria.
